As such we are on the look-out for A-player development managers who promote both a bottom-up, ownership culture as well as having a very strong engineering background. Some companies decide to make a distinction between “people” and “technical” managers. We do not; we are looking for those high-functioning individuals who have great skills at working with people; getting the best from them.
At the same time those individuals need to be extremely strong technically: it is through our leadership we can help coach our engineers best practices in architecture, scalability robustness.
Fundamentally any leadership role here is about creating fantastic teams and you will have the ownership to decide how best to make this happen. You will need to lead up to a maximum of 10 direct reports. It is your responsibility to have this group of people function at the very highest level.
Naturally then recruitment, coaching, best practice, methodology will all fit within your areas of expertise. Development Manager is still principally a technical role - whilst it may not be necessary for you to code on a day-to-day basis (up to you if you like to use code as a way to educate / reach people) what will absolutely be necessary is for you to own the engineering quality of your systems and subsequently the engineering culture within your team. This will touch monitoring, support, code, architecture, deployments, horizontally scaling products, self-healing systems - World class systems created by World class people.
